A day ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said August 14 would be observed as “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of the people.

In a series of tweets, Modi said, “Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.”

“May the #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment,” he said in a separate post on his official Twitter handle, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

The Indian PM’s announcement of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day came on a day when Pakistan is marking its Independence Day.

The Indian subcontinent was partitioned in August, 1947 leading to the creation of India and Pakistan.
