An agent of City Bank was shot dead by a group of alleged muggers in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila yesterday.
According to police, the miscreants shot the man in a bid to snatching Tk 46 lakh that he was carrying.
The dead is Khademul Islam, 35, of Jatarpur village in the upazila.
Sajedul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Gangni Police Station, said the victim was going to the bank’s booth alone by motorcycle.
The miscreants blocked his way in Khoksa area and tried to snatch the bag in which he was carrying the money. Sensing the situation, Khademul shouted for help.
Hearing him screaming, locals rushed to the spot, forcing the miscreants to leave immediately, the police official said, adding that the criminals shot Khademul from behind while fleeing the spot.
Locals rescued Khademul and admitted him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex.
He was later referred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital as his condition was critical. However, he succumbed to his injuries on his way to the hospital.
According to the OC, police were conducting operations to nab the killers.
