At least four Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Chittagong University unit were injured in a factional clash early today.

The injured are Md Muzahid of Sanskrit department, Sabbir Ahmed of Political Science department, Sahil Kabir of Arabic department and Jahid Chowdhury of History department of the university, said police.

“Of them, Muzahid and Sabbir were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment, while the other two received primary treatment at the university medical centre,” said Mohammad Alauddin, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH Police Outpost.

According to BCL insiders, there has been a feud for a long time between former CU unit BCL organising secretary Md Ilias and former finance secretary Jehedul Awal centring the leadership of a sub-group “Bijoy”.

“Jahid who is loyal to Jehedul, was beaten up by a BCL group led by Muzahid who is loyal to Ilias, after he went to Alaol Hall of the university to stay overnight,” said police.

As the news spread, activists of both groups armed with sharp weapons gathered at the hall and eventually ended up breaking into a clash with each other leaving the four injured, added police.

Police and CU proctorial body rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control at 2:00am, said police.

“The incident was a misunderstanding,” Ilias told the correspondent.

However, Jahedul while speaking with this correspondent blamed Ilias for the clash. “The attack was carried out upon the Ilias’ direction.”

“Action will be taken after investigating the matter,” said CU Proctor Rabiul Hasan.
