Police last night arrested a man for setting a 65-year-old man on fire, who died of his wounds in Khagrachhari’s Ramgarh upazila.

The deceased was identified as Chai Thoai Marma, belonging to the Marma community, reports our Bandarban correspondent quoting Rajib Chandra Kar, inspector (investigation) of Ramgarh Police Station.

The arrestee is Md Sharif, who confessed his involvement in the crime during primary interrogation, the inspector said.

Quoting eyewitnesses, the victim’s daughter Ma Ma Ching Marma said Sharif attacked her father at a local tea stall.

“He first hit my father in the head with a stick and then poured petrol on him and set him on fire, leaving him critically injured,” she said.

The victim was rushed to Ramgarh UpazilaHealth complex where he succumbed to his injuries, Inspector Rajib said.

He said they are investigating the incident.
