News portals that are unregistered and those that spread false news will be shut down in phases, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud said today.

“We have prepared a list of unregistered news portals which will be sent to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) by tomorrow,” the minister said while exchanging views with journalists at his ministry office today.

“Once they (BTRC) receive the list, they will start shutting down the unregistered portals in phases,” he added.

A few days ago, several online news portals, including the state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), were temporarily shut down.

When asked about the reason behind this, the minister said it happened due to a misunderstanding which was resolved later. 

Hasan said online portals which spread rumours and misinformation will continue to be shut down.
