The Daily Star journalist Rashidul Hasan today received Nagad-Dhaka Reporters Unity Best Reporting Award-2021 in crime and law and order category.

A total of 22 journalists — 13 under print and online category and nine under television and radio category — received the award at a ceremony at Krishibid Institute auditorium in Dhaka.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury handed over the awards to the winners. Each awardee received a certificate, crest and Tk 75,000 prize money.

Rashidul, a senior reporter of The Daily Star, won the award in print category for a report titled “Crimes behind Brahman cows: Shady businesses manipulate system to dodge ban on import of the cattle breed, make hefty profits,” published on July 19, 2021.

The report delved deep into how 18 Brahman cows were flown in from the US amid pandemic restrictions by importer Sadeeq Agro Limited using fake livestock ministry documents.

Forged documents were used to dodge the government’s ban imposed in 2016 on import of the Brahman cows, after Bangladesh attained self-sufficiency in meat production.

The importer or its agent did not even submit to the customs authorities the bill of entry, a mandatory legal document, on or before the arrival of a consignment.
