Police arrested Moinuddin Ahmed Babu, an aide to Cumilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku, over the communal attacks in the city on October 13.
“He was on the run. A police team arrested him from Rangamati’s Sajek area last night,” said Anwarul Azim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station in Cumilla.
Police brought him to Cumilla and showed him arrested in two cases that were filed following the violence. One was filed by Tarun Kanti Modok, general secretary of Nanua Dighirpar puja mandap, while the other by police for attacking Thakurpara Gachhtala temple.
Police produced him before a court with a seven-day remand prayer in the afternoon, the OC told our local correspondent.
Iqbal Hossen, who was arrested for placing the Holy Quran inside a puja mandap, the incident that led to communal violence in several districts, said Babu was among the instigators of the attacks in Cumilla, according to police.
Babu is known among locals as the personal secretary to the Cumilla mayor. Sakku, however, had earlier said he did not have a PS but admitted that Babu often accompanied him.
Apart from Babu, police earlier arrested two others — Roman Hasan, joint secretary of Cumilla city Swechchasebak Dal and Rabiul Islam — in connection with the cases.
