A college student jumped off a moving bus at Manikganj’s Saturia upazila yesterday noon to escape rape attempt by the bus driver.

Police arrested the driver, Khokon Miah, 28, and seized the bus.

The victim is a student of Government Debendra College in Manikganj town. She boarded the bus of Kalampur Enterprise from Dhamrai Thana Road area to go to Manikganj town yesterday morning.

After travelling few miles, all the passengers except the girl got down from the bus.

“Few moments later, I could sense something wrong, I also tried to get down from the bus. The bus driver did not stop. Rather, he (driver) stood up from the steering seat and asked the helper to drive the bus,” said the girl.

“Then, the driver tried to rape me. At one stage, I jumped off the moving bus Golora area on Dhaka-Aricha highway,” said the victim while talking to newsmen.

A private car was plying behind the bus. Seeing the incident, the private car driver stopped the car and rescued the girl from the side of the road.

Then, he took the girl to nearby Golora Highway Police Station where the girl later talked to media.

Contacted, the highway police station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Monirul Islam said, “Hearing the incident, we arrested the bus driver and seized the bus. We suggested the girl to file case in this connection with Saturia Police Station.”

Ashraful Alam, OC of Saturia Police Station, said a case has been filed in this connection and legal action would be taken against the accused driver.

The girl suffered minor injuries and took treatment to nearby clinics, said witnesses. ###
