Miscreants attempted to loot Trust Bank Limited’s Halishahar branch in Chattogram city early today, but after failing to break the vault, they set documents and daily vouchers on fire.
The incident occurred between 2:30am and 5:30am, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Halishahar Police Station Mustafizur Rahman.
Miscreants also ransacked the office furniture including in branch manager’s room, the OC told our Chattogram staff correspondent.
OC Mustafizur Rahman further said, “Two masked miscreants entered the office, cutting the grill of the window, through the back of the building.”
“They first opened cabinet drawers of the deck and later tried to break the vault door. Afterwards, they went to the manager’s room. They ransacked the office, damaged the sofa set and vandalised the computer monitor,” he said, after examining CCTV footage of the bank.
“After that they set the files and documents on fire and left the office,” the OC said.
The police official said during the incident, two night guards of the bank were asleep. In the morning, bank officials noticed smoke coming out from the office and informed police.
“We are collecting CCTV footage and talked to the bank officials,” said the OC adding that a case was lodged in this connection.
Managing Director and CEO of Trust Bank Limited, Humaira Azam, told The Daily Star that two miscreants entered the bank but they failed to break the vault.
