Four out of every ten independent candidates, mostly ruling Awami League “rebels”, won chairman posts in the second phase of union parishad election held on Thursday.
Awami League backed candidates won 58 percent chairman posts, compared to first phase’s 76 percent, shows the Election Commission (EC) data unveiled last night.
In the second phase, elections were held in 835 unions but result of one union parishad was withheld, EC Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman told The Daily Star.
Independent candidates fared well in the second phase of election as they won 40 percent of chairman posts, compared to 24 percent in the first phase of the election.
According to the EC statistics, in Thursday’s election, AL chairman candidates were victorious in 486 unions. Of them, 81 were elected unopposed.
It also shows that 330 independent candidates won. Party insiders said almost all of them are AL rebel candidates.
Ten Jatiya Party candidates, four Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidates, one candidate each from Jatiya Party (JP), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Khelafat Majlish won.
In the first phase of election, 267 Awami League candidates won, and of them 71 were elected unopposed while 85 independent candidates won the elections held in two parts on June 21 and September 20 due to Covid-19 situation.
