India is set to issue tourist visas from November 15 after a pause of 19 months for the global coronavirus pandemic, much to the cheer of Bangladeshis who account for the largest share of foreign tourist arrivals in the neighbouring country.
Initially, a single-entry visa will be issued for travel by air, Indian High Commissioner Vikram Kumar Doraiswami told reporters at Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura Land Port yesterday while travelling to his country.
The visa’s duration would be 120 days but the stay cannot be more than 30 days.
Visas for travel by road and rail will be issued gradually, he said.
The Indian visa application centres in Bangladesh resumed operations in October last year and were issuing visas under all categories save for tourist visas.
In 2020, more than 1.6 million visas were issued by the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.
About 20 percent of the foreign arrivals in India last year were from Bangladesh, which is the highest. Bangladesh was followed by the US (14.4 percent) and the UK (10.6 percent).
