A court in Manikganj today sentenced a man to death and four to life term imprisonment for killing an NGO chairman in Saturia upazila in 2006.

The convict senteced to death is Shahin Alam (27) of Dhaka. Four who received life term are: Sahed, Raja Miah, Abdul Quddus and Bisnu of Tangail, reports our Manikganj correspondent.

The court also acquitted two other accused as the allegations brought against them could not be proved, the court sources said.

However, four convicts, including Shahin Alam, are on the run.

According to the prosecution, Shahid, who hailed from Tangail’s Ghatail upazila, and Shahin Alam jointly established an NGO named “Priyo Bangla Samaj Unnayan Sangstha” in 2006. Shahid was chairman of the organisation. The NGO later got a fund Tk 10 lakh.

On May 20 the same year, Shahin and other accused killed Shahid near Kalsai river in Manikganj’s Saturia over the fund.

A case was filed against seven people over the murder.

After scrutinising 25 witnesses and documents, Utpal Bhattacharya, judge of Manikganj Additional Session Judge’s court, handed down the verdict today.
