The Rab arrested five people in the capital’s Swamibagh area on charges of spreading anti-state propaganda.
The arrestees are: Abdullah Al Mahmud, 29, Wayez Kuruni, 27, Touhidul Islam 26, Gazi Sakhawat, 29, and Habibur Rahman, 30, said a Rab media release yesterday.
Several laptops, portable hard disks, and leaflets containing provocative and anti-state statements were seized during the arrests, it said.
During primary interrogation, all five confessed to their involvement in spreading anti-state conspiracies and sabotage.
The arrestees said they formed secret groups on social media platforms where they negatively portrayed the activities of the government and the law enforcement agencies.
They also tried to destabilise the country’s communal harmony by spreadingedited audio and visual contents on social media, the release said.
Multiple cases have been filed against Abdullah Al Mahmud and Touhidul Islam with various police stations.
Legal action is being taken against those arrested, added the release.
