The High Court today granted bail to Joy Gopal Sarkar, general secretary of Dhaka Wanderers Club, in four separate money laundering cases. He allegedly had links to illegal casino business.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman granted the bail after hearing four separate bail petitions filed by Joy Gopal’s lawyers.
“Joy Gopal cannot be released following the HC verdict, as he is still shown arrested in two other criminal cases,” Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star.
“The government will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC verdict,” Amin also said.
Lawyers Md Qamrul Islam, Abdur Rahman Hawlader and Munmun Rahman appeared for Joy Gopal while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during the hearing.
Joy Gopal was arrested on July 14 last year in connection with five money laundering cases filed at different police stations including the capital’s Wari and Sutrapur police stations, on various dates in 2019 and 2020.
“Another case was filed against Joy Gopal and others at Bangshal Police Station on August 31 last year,” the deputy attorney general added.
