A mobile court detained 23 fishermen for illegally catching brood hilsa in the Padma river in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj.

Of them, 13 were sentenced to 20-day imprisonment while the rest, aged below 18 years, have been released on bond, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting Executive Magistrate Kawser Hamid.

The fishermen were held during a drive — to protect brood hilsa — in the river yesterday from 4:00am to 11:30am, he said.

He added that 1.20 lakh metres of illegal fishing nets, 30kg of brood hilsa, and four fishing boats were seized during the drive.

The seized nets were destroyed and the seized fish was distributed among three orphanages, the executive magistrate said.
