Devotees of Shib Bari Puja Mandap were taking idols to Firingi Bazar on the occasion of Durga Puja, said Hillol Sen, general secretary of Chattogram city unit Puja Udjapan Parishad.
When the truck was crossing Kotwali area, some workers of a fruit wholesale market hurled a pomelo at the idols, breaking the hand of one of the idols, he said.
After the incident, devotees gathered in front of the Kotwali Police Station and were agitating on a demand of arrest and punishment of the liable people, said witnesses.
Contacted, Liton Kumar Shill, president of Kotwali Thana Puja Committee, said the workers at the fruit market hurled a pomelo aiming at the idols without any instigation.
“We are aggrieved and our religious sentiment was hurt,” he said, adding that they could identify the miscreants and they want their immediate arrest and punishment. He said they were going to file a case in this regard.
The Daily Star tried to contact Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Nezam Uddin, but he did not answer his phone.
