Two women went missing tonight as a passenger trawler capsized after a sand-laden bulkhead collided with it in the Shitalakkhya River in Narayanganj’s Rupganj.

The missing women are Chaity (18), daughter of Selim Miah, and Jabeda Begum (40), residents of Chanpara area of the upazila, reports our Narayanganj correspondent quoting Rupganj Police Station Inspector (investigation) Md Hazrat Ali.

A boat carrying 20 passengers capsized in the river when a sand-laded bulkhead hit the boat at Office Ghat area, the inspector said, quoting locals.

“Eighteen passengers managed to swim ashore while two women remained missing,” he said, adding that they have informed the river police and fire service officials of the accident.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Chanpara Naval Police Outpost Montu Kumar Das told The Daily Star that they were visiting the spot.

The bulkhead was seized by the locals of the area, he said adding that legal actions will be taken after filing of a case.
